Men and women are lining up to receive their copy of the Bible and are reading it as they serve our country.

The Canadian Bible Society has a long history of distributing Bibles into the Canadian Forces. We are also the only Bible organization in Canada that is able to do this, and over 50,000 copies of this Bible have been distributed in the last few years. This Bible is especially designed with the Forces camouflage colors and fits into the kit of the soldiers.

At one time or another we have all wished that we could find buried treasure. I remember growing up and wanting to have one of those hand held metal detectors. I had observed people using them at the beach and knew that this was all I needed to find buried treasure! Well, my wish never came true, and every know and then I think about all the fun I would have with a metal detector!

This year, the theme for Bible Sunday 2009 is Buried Treasure. Based on Psalm 119, the theme invites all ages to uncover the riches of the Bible to know God better. The Canadian Bible Society is providing FREE resources to help you on this important day. We are suggesting October 25th, but you are encouraged to pick whatever Sunday might fit into your church calendar.

When you register for this Sunday, you will receive everything you need to uncover buried treasure in your faith community! To register click here.

The Country I grew up in!

I grew up in a small Southern Africa country called Swaziland. I could tell you some great stories of adventure in the bush! Chances are that the only reason you have heard of this country is because of the tragic AIDS epidemic taking place there. It is hard to see and hear of the devastating effects of AIDS, so every time I hear of a good news story from Swaziland I celebrate it!

This week I learned of an initiative to teach sign language to hearing people so that they could help hearing impaired people to hear the Bible. On May 30, 2009, the first 15 students to complete level one Sign Language training organized by the Bible Society in Swaziland were presented their certificates. This initiative follows up on the launch of the signed SiSwati Bible project that began last year! Luke was the first Gospel to be signed, and the Gospel of John is now in the final production phase.

Mr Masinga, the Manzini Regional Education Officer, said “We thank the Bible Society for making people aware that deaf people are very important to society. We cannot continue to marginalized people: they are our neighbours, as Jesus taught us.”

Celebrate this good news from Swaziland with me!

Connecting with the Bible Society

It seems like there are an increasing number of ways for people to get connected in our high-tech world! Especially with people who might be living far away and not around the corner! In the last couple of weeks I have been able to connect with friends in Spain, France, Oklahoma and other places across the country. It is great to see what they are doing and to be able to renew old friendships!

There are also times when you might want to connect with people over a common cause. You can meet in a building, at an event, or in an online community. The Canadian Bible Society has an online community by way of our Facebook group. This group has experienced incredible growth in the last few weeks and offers a place for people to connect around the Bible cause. It also offers a place for people to communicate prayer concerns.

For those of you who use Facebook, why not take a moment to join the Canadian Bible Society group? You can join the group at Canadian Bible Society Facebook. It is a place to get connected to other people who believe in The Word.
